Water Injection

3-5rwhp Gained.
We recently completed an intercooler installation on a customer's car who has been surviving on water injection for the past year while he saved up enough money for an Intercooler. We didn't know he was installing the water injection in the meantime whilst waiting for the Intercooler otherwise we would have advised him against it. But going on popular theory and believing water injection was going to help, he went ahead anyway. Here are some photos of the slow destruction and degradation caused by water injection into a V6 Supercharged M90 powered engine. All this destruction for a bit of detonation suppression ... seems hardly worth the 3-5rwhp gained.
    
Delamination of the Teflon Coating
We knew of the dangers of water injection almost 5 years ago from playing around with it on the original FIT Turbo Mule 'S' Pak, before it had the turbo system and was still running the M90 Supercharger. We didn't feel it was our department to report on the problems as we thought it was just our experience with it, and the problem wasn't all that widespread.

But since then we have seen many examples of the destruction, erosion and corrosion left behind from the aftermath of water hitting the rotors at high speed and chemical reactions of water and bare aluminium.

Here are some pics from a pulled apart M90 that had previously run water injection. Note the almost TOTAL DELAMINATION of the Teflon Coating on the Rotors. The Teflon Coating is required to provide improved rotor sealing and thermal efficiency. The loss of Teflon Coating from the rotors results in dramatic loss of boost and power.

We have seen 2PSI DROP from Stripped Teflon Rotors, and subsequent estimated 10rwhp Power Loss. The Rotors are not available for purchase as a separate component; you will need to purchase a whole new Supercharger for $1600 from Holden if you want to fix this problem.

    
Your Prerogative
We are not knocking its use or totally against it. If you decide to use it on your M90 that your prerogative, but if you are thinking of going Intercooler later this may lessen the amount of total horsepower you can create. Also, water injection has been found to work fine in other applications, such as Centrifugal Superchargers and Turbochargers, mainly due to the difference in Impeller Designs (no Teflon coating to ruin) and that fact that the latter are Compressors where as the M90 is only a Positive Displacement Pump.

We are not here to deliberate about its use, just inform you of the potential hazards. If you decide to use it from knowing this information that's your choice. After having just completed our final design of Ported M90 Superchargers we have discovered part of the reason why differing designs created more or less power was strongly correlated to the condition of the rotors. The less Stripped and more Perfect Condition the Rotors the better the supercharger would perform.
