The World's Fastest M90 L67 Powered Supercharged V6
|
|
And officially the Outright Fastest and Most Powerful M90 Supercharged V6 in Australia Blair's WOW-10z Red Sigma continues to Break Records and Stun the V6 Community with previously unattainable titles and in the progress making headlines all across the world!! This Mighty Red Sigma may look relatively standard, but it's an absolute Rocket Ship and an Incredible Pioneer to the L67 Scene making Power and Times no other car has even come close to in the Oz Racing Scene and what makes it even more amazing is it is doing so with a virtually stock L67 with a minimum of bolt-on modifications. The Factory L67 Stock Items: - Stock Engine
- Stock Cam
- Stock Rods
- Stock Heads
- Stock Stroke
- Stock Converter
- Stock Intake Manifold
- Stock Throttle Body
- Stock M90
- Stock U-bend
The only items of Modification are:- FIT A2A Intercooler
- FIT 1.9 Rockers
- FIT 17psi Boost Upgrade
- 100Hp Shot of NoS
- Forged Pistons
- Microtech LT10s
... and that's it!!That's what's so amazing about this machine!! The fact it's Breaking Records in ¼ Mile Performance and in Out-Right Power Titles has the V6 Community bamboozled and asking how the heck is all this possible? Well Blair's, CHE's and FIT's approach is ... only change the bare essentials and leave the rest stock. Well so far the only things that's broken is the 4L60E Auto, so Blair had it rebuilt at Figtree automatics, along with a 3.45:1 Mini-Spooled B/W Diff from a Ford Falcon, but keeping the Stock Converter. The prior owner fitted a Nitrous kit which Blair and Dale at CHE re-wired and re-fitted to a different position for maximum performance gains. They also fitted a Microtech to make tuning easier. Blair gave the engine a freshen up with new rings and replaced the forged pistons that were previously fitted and due to stress marks on the ring lands they were replaced with ACL forgies to cope with the proposed additional NoS. It probably would be able to achieve the same remarkable progress on stock pistons because they have been proven to be quite strong, but the forgies provide extra assurance of coping with NoS activation. Aside from that the Engine and Driveline is Totally Stock!! So what's the Result of all this Pioneering Development?

WOW-10z Build-Up History
|
|
Exactly what is this car, what are it's modifications and who does it belong to? The car is very unique and extremely rare as it's not a Holden, it's actually a Mitsubishi Sigma with an L67 Supercharged V6 Conversion. This is one of only three examples we know of in Australia. Along with defying convention the fact this car also holds claim to the titles of Fastest and Most Powerful L67 in Oz makes the curiosity of this project even more intriguing!! From the outside it looks like most other Sigma's, however the big tyres filling the back guards and roll cage implicitly visible through the rear screen incites the mystery of what's going on under the hood. Upon seeing the engine you are immediately welcomed by the familiar sight of the Eaton M90 Supercharger but remain puzzled thinking, "I never knew Sigma's came out with a supercharger". Well you're right, they didn't, but seeing the M90 equipped Super6 in the Sigma engine bay you would swear it was factory as it's near perfect fit and looks like it was meant to be. Why a Sigma, and Why a Super6? Having owned a series of fast cars over the span of his interests and enthusiasm in the car racing and performance arena Blair wanted something different to the typical Turbo 4cyl or Big V8 combo and was chasing around for something interestingly different. He wanted to start from scratch with a Gemini or Datsun 120Y and kit it out with an Inline Turbo 6 or Rotary, but none were overly appealing due to registration and engineering limitations. Thinking of other alternatives just out of pure chance Blair managed to be in the right place at the right time to take opportunity of a Supercharged V6 Sigma that was up for sale that had already run 11.9sec with no NoS and 10.8sec with NoS. Being a very compact engine with many great characteristics such as instantaneous throttle response, power, torque, reliability and rareness it all started to compile to what could be a very exciting project. For the next couple of months the car was just driven around as a daily driver, shops, work and back. It was quite good fun and had quite a bit of poke, but with Blair having previously owned a number of extremely fast cars it didn't take long before the urge for more power beckoned his call. After doing a bit of research and asking around everything seemed to point in the one direction.

FIT Performance in Western Australia!!
|
|
Being Australia's Foremost Supercharged V6 Specialist inspired confidence and after having a quick chat to Tony it was discovered the previous owner of the Sigma had already acquired a heap of upgrades from FIT including a 10psi Boost Upgrade and 1.9 Rockers for $1,390 which resulted in a substantial increase in power. Initial Power in stock form with restrictive exhaust was 164rwhp. After upgrading to Twin 2 ¼" Exhaust, 10psi Boost and 1.9 Rockers Power jumped up to 200rwhp very quickly. This amounted to a Gain of 36rwhp - Not bad for under $2k in parts!! The new found power managed to reel off an 11.9 @ 108mph which is very impressive and respectable considering it was just a Boost, Rocker and Exhaust Combo. The car started to gain the interest, attention and curiosity from many racers wondering what the heck was making the car so goddamn fast. He explained the engine was essentially standard, just a couple of quick bolt-on's was all, but many still thought there was more to it than that. Surely an 11.9sec ¼ mile with a stock'ish Super6 is not possible - right? Well it is, and the car was able to repeat the times successively on many occasions. Excited about the prospect of what NoS could do for the Super6 being a form of intercooling from the freezing gas and the extra oxygen and nitrogen particles it was anticipated this would make a substantial improvement to power and performance. He started off by rigging up a 50Hp Single Fogger Wet NoS system and soon found a substantial increase in power. Next Stage was a 100Hp Shot which required quite some courage to do seeing as it hadn't been trialled before in Australia. The 100Hp Shot of NoS surpassed his wildest expectations. How’s 319rwhp Sound?! Remember this is with just the Stock L67 Engine, 10psi Boost, 1.9 Rockers, Exhaust and NoS ... 300+rwhp - Amazing !! Absolutely thrilled he couldn't wait to get it down the track again. After a bit of practice and refinement of launch technique managed a 1.5 60'ft time and reeled off a 10.8sec at 115mph!! Great times, Great Achievement, but was told by officials he could not race again until he had a 6 Point Steel Roll Cage fitted for safety and tech inspected before any further racing was permissible and the previous owner had then decided to sell the car.

Blair, Dale (CHE) and FIT Combined Enhancements
|
|
This was the point at which Blair acquired the car for $8,000 and decided to go on furthering the development. Not realising it at the time until he spoke with Tony at FIT did it become apparent this Mighty Red Sigma was actually at the top of its League in the L67 Scene. Not only was the time so spectacular but it also happened to smash the Australian M90 Supercharged V6 ¼ Mile Record by a whopping 0.6sec Quicker (which is a country mile in racing terms)!! Not even being aware of what the record was or wanting to surpass it made the project even more interesting. Whilst the Power and Times were already outstanding, there's the desire to make even more power and go even faster. So getting on the phone to FIT to find out what the next best stage of upgrade recommendations would be steered the project down the path of Intercooling. However with Intercoolers costing close to $2,800 it was just a bit more than Blair wanted to spend at the time. So it was time to look at alternatives. After considering cam, heads and all that stuff it quite quickly added up to even more than what the Intercooler was going to cost so Blair decided to keep it relatively stock for the moment but just freshen up the engine with Forged ACL Pistons and some new rings to better handle a proposed increase in NoS capacity. But it's only a matter of time before the mind starts to wander again and that itch to find more power and go even faster becomes an irrepressible urge. Pacing up and down the hallway Blair did his best to try and resist the calling to go Intercooler. He did well at first, but the force was too strong and eventually it got the better of him. Knowing the FIT A2A (Air-to-Air) system was still hovering around the $2,800 marker and not wanting to spend that much, Blair started looking and researching for cheaper alternatives. In Australia he found a new breed of Intercooler called W2A (Water-to-Air) was being newly released to the L67 performance scene. After making enquiries and doing a lot of homework Blair concluded the W2A only had limited ability to cool the air and therefore power would not be that impressive. Coupled with only being able to run low boost (12psi) Blair realised it just wasn't going to achieve the results he was after and although it was cheaper in the short-term, it would only eventuate in him having to spend the money again in the long-run to get the extreme power results he was after. So back onto the phone to Tony at FIT he discussed other possible alternatives. As it turned out, due to the FMIC and Plumbing being mainly suited to the commodore chassis it was decided Blair could do without these items and just purchase the plate and accessory kit for $1,850. From there Blair purchased a generic Bar-and Plate FMIC Cooler from e-bay for $183 including postage. With Blair having some contacts in the Automotive Industry he managed to fabricate Intercooler piping to complete the system (thanks to TTS Automotive and Oakflats Muffler Men).

Blair, Dale (CHE) and FIT Intercooled 376rwhp - Unopened!!
|
|
Once installed Blair went a saw a good associate of his, Dale from Castle Hill Exhaust Centre (CHE). With Dale being very experienced with modifications, tuning and incorporating NoS it didn't take long before he had wired in a new Microtec LT10S and left the Delco to control the auto transmission. With only a couple of quick load ascertainment runs and quick calibration adjustments the Intercooled Super6 reeled of a healthy 272rwhp. So it seemed the Microtech ECU and Intercooled added a good 72rwhp over and above the 10psi Boost and 1.9 Rocker stock ECU power level. With only limited power runs and tuning time, Blair and Dale turned their efforts to Activating the NoS. With the strong notion of wanting to keep things very safe and conservative they rigged up 100Hp of NoS with an intentionally rich A/F ratio of 10.8:1 as this would help provide plenty of safety margin for any variables that might be encountered to possibly lean off A/F Ratios on the dyno or down the track. Well how did it go? Exceptional - A Blistering 376rwhp!! And that was with a very conservative tune and what makes it even more remarkable is it was achieved on a ... 37°C Ambient Summers day!! This is the harshest environment for forced induction and NoS equipped engines and it still managed to reel off the most impressive Dyno Numbers ever recorded for an Australian M90 Supercharged V6. Again, without even thinking or meaning to do so Blair managed to pick himself up another Accolade. "Australia's Most Powerful M90 Supercharged V6" ... add this to his already claimed other title Blair now bears title to: "Australia's Fastest and Most Powerful M90 L67 supercharged V6" And what makes this even more remarkable is it was accomplished with less than $6k in engine modifications Amazing, Inspiring, Commendations and Respect are our words to Blair and Dale (CHE's) achievements in pushing the boundaries of L67 Performance in Oz to new heights. Who would have thought this rare and unique project would climb to such high levels of achievements and to take out Top Honours in L67 Performance in Australia.
