It's a given that fuel prices are going to keep going up, not down - the only question appears to be "how much more?" As a result, people are making a conscious effort to ensure that they get the best price on fuel. But how do you measure what the best fuel price really is? Fuel comes in all different flavours! The average consumer is going to make what appears to be the most economical and sensible decision - buy the fuel that has the lowest price. This is where their problems begin. Publications released by General Motors Holden for the Supercharged V6 engine recommend fuel with an octane rating of 95 or higher. Regular unleaded fuel, with an octane rating of 91 RON is only suggested as an alternative, or for the standard ECOTEC V6. In the past and even more recently there has been an increase in the number of customers reporting problems of mis-firing, erratic idle, stalling, choking, pinging, detonation and other irregularities from the use of other brands of 98 RON fuel. We have seen and heard time and time again all types of problems resulting from the use of "non BP Ultimate 98" fuel in Supercharged V6's. Whether completely stock or highly modified the feedback seems to be the same. Some have reported good results with the Shell Optimax, but the majority of the feedback we have been given was unfavourable feedback. It's understandable why Optimax is the preferred choice for some people, given the "fuel docket" discounts available when you buy your groceries from participating stores. Even a bottle of your favourite Johnny Walker will save you 4c/ltr - I'll drink to that!! |

In simple terms, you're getting less power than you should. This is directly offset by the driver indirectly pushing the car harder to get the level of power they want at their disposal. As a result you're using more fuel therefore deteriorating your fuel economy. The Department of Consumer Protection's fuel watch-dog Fuelwatch has available on its website historical fuel prices going back to January 2001. Fuel increase averages are as shown below.

| What it "Ultimately" adds up (or down) to | ||||||||||||||||||||
According to BP's website, Ultimate 98 will increase your fuel economy "up to 5.8% increase, or an extra 43kms per tank compared to a car using regular unleaded fuel (based on a 70litre tank at an average fuel consumption of 9.5 l per 100km". It also means that it only costs an extra $4.90 to fill up your tank. It's a small price to pay considering what you're getting.
